The importance of geosciences has led the Union of Comoros to capitalise on the development of the country's geological sectors.
This interest was materialised by the creation of the Comoros Geological Office (BGC) to supervise and ensure the rational management of geological resources. Indeed, soil and subsoil resources can play an important role in the economic and social development of the country.
In this respect, the BGC is responsible for the elaboration and implementation of the petroleum and mining policy, but also for research in geosciences and for the rational and sustainable exploitation of resources. In response to climate and energy challenges, the BGC is working to develop geothermal energy to put economic growth on a sustainable path.
This source of energy will make it possible to avoid the annual subsidy of about 80 billion francs from the state to support Sonelec.
As for the oil sector, significant progress has been made in exploration. Two exploration contracts and two production sharing contracts are underway in the Comorian offshore.
In the mining sector, a Mining Code is being drafted to provide the country with a regulatory framework governing the rational exploitation of mineral resources, including the exploitation of quarry substances.
Geological mapping is also envisaged to improve knowledge of the soil and subsoil resources.
All these sectors constitute the backbone of industrial development and can contribute considerably to the emergence of the country by 2030. The BGC is committed to putting all its expertise at the service of the development of these sectors to meet the legitimate aspirations of the Comorian people.
